The NOAA-20 polar orbiting satellite provides us with a detailed image of the Arctic Coast. With over 7 days of persistent northeast winds, an open lead in the sea ice is forming. With water temperatures warmer than the air temperature, a thin layer of clouds are forming along this lead of open water. This is a similar process to lake effect snow in the great lakes, but with very little moisture in the atmosphere there won't be any falling snow with these clouds. #AKwx | US National Weather Serv
